Two or three things i know for sure5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() I regard such art to be strictly personal where memories both wispy and vivid try to capture life from a central and peripheral standpoint. This was a good Year of reading memoirs for me and it helped a great deal in recognizing the art that goes behind writing one. ![]() Two or Three Things I Know for Sure, steeped in the hard-won wisdom of experience, expresses the strength of her unique vision with beauty and eloquence. ![]() With luminous clarity, Allison explores how desire surprises and what power feels like to a young girl as she confronts abuse.Īs always, Dorothy Allison is provocative, confrontational, and brutally honest. ![]() Illustrated with photographs from the author's personal collection, Two or Three Things I Know for Sure tells the story of the Gibson women - sisters, cousins, daughters, and aunts - and the men who loved them, often abused them, and, nonetheless, shared their destinies. Now, in Two or Three Things I Know for Sure, she takes a probing look at her family's history to give us a lyrical, complex memoir that explores how the gossip of one generation can become legends for the next. Bastard Out of Carolina, nominated for the 1992 National Book Award for fiction, introduced Dorothy Allison as one of the most passionate and gifted writers of her generation. ![]() Anthony kiedis biography book5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() The way he, in his 40s when writing the book, describes meeting and sleeping with a child is disturbing. They played a show in New Orleans, and after, a “lovely young woman” came into their dressing room. It was not written in a tone that makes the reader think this was a bad thing - a literal crime - that happened. We could, but we can’t, because it does not read as if it was a mistake. We could chalk this criminal story up to Kiedis going over mistakes he’s made. He talks about various elements of his life, including his upbringing and drug abuse. Scar Tissue is a memoir about Kiedis’s past. What is less common is an artist writing out the encounter, fully dramatizing it, and admitting to not only sleeping with the girl again after she says she’s 14, she’s the daughter of a police chief, and she is technically “missing”, but also to later writing a sexually explicit song about said minor. Like the rest of the entertainment world, there are more than enough examples of rock artists’ sexual misconduct being an open secret. A sexual predator, a child predator, in the rock industry is not even remotely surprising at this point in history. ![]() O Humankind by Cemalnur Sargut5/11/2023 ![]() CHITTICK - The Importance of Sufism in Chinese Islam ERNST - Kenan Rifai’s Teaching Method, and the Masnavi Commentary Omid SAFI - Kenan Rifai: Timeless Sufi Teachings Made Timely for a Turbulent World.Stephen HIRTENSTEIN - The School of Love and Knowledge: Reflections on Kenan Rifai (1867-1950) and Bülent Rauf (1911-1987).LAWRENCE - The Prophet’s Ascent: Sheikh Muzaffer, Ibn ‘Arabi and Kenan Rifai MORRIS - Kenan Rifai as Spiritual Teacher: Insights From His Lessons on Rumi’s Masnavi Semih CEYHAN - Ottoman Sheikh-Al-Islams Initiated to Kenan Rifai.Ercan ALKAN - An Evaluation of the book "Seyyid Ahmed er-Rifâî" in terms of the History of Sufi Literature.Hatice Dilek GÜLDÜTUNA - Kenan Rifai and Woman as the Mirror of God the Truth.Osman Nuri KÜÇÜK - Kenan Rifai’s Understanding of Religion and Shari‛a. ![]() Mustafa KARA - “The Wayfarer Desiring the Path of Truth”: Lessons from Kenan Rifai’s Poem.Mehmet DEMİRCİ - Kenan Rifai’s Life and Personality. ![]() The sandman season of mists5/11/2023 ![]() Now, after a first season full of exciting twists and turns, viewers are wondering the same thing: Is there going to be a season 2 of The Sandman? ![]() The long-awaited Netflix show, based on writer Neil Gaiman's best-selling DC comic book series of the same name, tells the complex, fantastical tale of Morpehus ( Tom Sturridge), the King of Dreams, as he sets out to restore order to his realm after escaping captivity from an occult group. 1 in the streaming giant's top 10 rankings.Ĭlearly, fans can't get enough of The Sandman - and it's easy to see why. From the 1995 biography Touching From a Distance, to the film biopic Control and the documentary Joy Division, both in 2008, people have questioned whether this kind of scrutiny is really what the reclusive and media shy Ian Curtis would’ve wanted. Certain sections have shown equal disdain towards other recent releases regarding the band. Many fans were disappointed when Peter Hook and his new band toured the Unknown Pleasures album, seeing it as nothing more than a money making scheme. ![]() There are a few schools of thought regarding the surge of interest in Joy Division over the last decade. ![]() The books of babel by josiah bancroft5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Like this for describing light hitting a stained glass window: ![]() I just finished the fourth book and I’ll be waiting for the next one eagerly.īancroft pulls off a type of writing that could come off as contrived in other contexts, but fits the styling of these books so perfectly that it draws a picture in your mind. It’s a fantastical story that gets richer and more engaging at every turn. It looks like steam punk, but it’s really not. I can’t say enough how impressed I am by this author’s ability to make a character jump off the page, with all their mistakes and triumphs and shame and growth.Īnd the story is equally amazing. They are raw, and diverse, and you are in their heads. But they truly grow and evolve, and that evolution is amazingly well executed. The characters all start out as one dimensional people, by design. They are meaningful, and unique, and funny, and rich. They’re fantasy, but of the type that draws you deeper into a thought provoking, colorful fever dream with every damn page. These are some seriously enjoyable books. ![]() Bb easton praying for rain5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Choose from Same Day Delivery, Drive Up or Order Pickup. ![]() ![]() Perhaps, together, they can learn how to live. All in all, the book should appeal to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Her presence and the fae all make the book seem aimed at a YA audience, and help to tone down the grisly bloody murders that the book is focused on. ![]() She has run off from her scientific parents and dull university studies to seek adventure, so she is primed to take a job as strange Jackaby's new assistant and to discover this supernatural world. ![]() Abigail Rook, our girl Friday, is lovely, open, intrepid, and game for adventure. The fantastic element is used by the author to lighten the mood of the book, add humor, and hone Jackaby's sharper edges (perhaps to the character's detriment overall). However, our Jackaby sees fae/faeries, ghosts, and other supernatural creatures, which Holmes would have had no truck with. He runs his own investigative service and butts in on police cases as Sherlock does. ![]() Jackaby is a prickly, fast-talking, socially-awkward pontificator much like Holmes, though without the darker sociaopathic edge of the true Sherlock.
